Dave Erfle – Volatility In Silver And Gold Stocks Around The SILJ Rebalance, And How To Build Your Own Junior PM Mining ETF

Shad Marquitz
February 2, 2024

Dave Erfle, Founder and Editor of the Junior Miner Junky, joins us to discuss the volatility in many silver and gold mining stocks earlier this week due to the SILJ rebalance, and tips on how to build your own junior mining ETF.  Dave makes the point to never sell a dull market, and that when we see outsized corrective moves to the downside, that these are the areas to actually be accumulating the quality PM producers and developers, while the sector is undervalued and underfollowed.

We also have Dave point out his technical outlook in gold, and the gold ETFs like GDX, GDXJ, and weigh in some of the macroeconomic news we got this last week. We wrap up with what financial data he is looking at moving forward, that may provide the catalysts for a breakout in the precious metals sector.

As mentioned in the interview with Dave Erfle up above, some of these choices of gold producers and large silver producers and royalty companies are really not the right choice for a “Junior” Silver ETF, but alas they opted for the more liquid larger names…. but this ETF is definitely NOT a good proxy for true silver junior stocks.

It is however a good proxy for an overall balanced silver/gold/royalty basket, with some quality companies included, and has merit in that sense. Clearly it could still be an attractive trading vehicle to use in the PM sector whether for longer term accumulation, trading options, or just swing-trading the ETF.

For that matter though SIL is the same basic thing, or so is GDXJ. The makeups are slightly different, but moving forward, I’d still anticipate their performance to all be relatively similar from this point forward considering all the overlap. I guess this weighting in SILJ, flawed as it is for a true junior silver basket, is still a very compelling basket of stocks, and I personally hold 17 of those positions in my portfolio as well. This SILJ could be a nice diversified PM anchor position in one’s portfolio, and then one could stack up a lot of juniors in addition to this for more torque.

Still the main takeaway from Dave’s interview is that if you really want a true junior basket of silver stocks or gold stocks, then you need to #BuildYourOwnETF.
